GMO Legislation

GREAT NEWS: CT Labeling Bill…

GREAT NEWS! Connecticut’s GMO labeling bill is back on track after talks and negotiations and goes to the House of Representatives for a vote after this weekend.

Everything looks like Connecticut will be able to pull this one off.  Connecticut very well may be the first state to pass a GMO labeling law.

This has been a rocky ride for Connecticut, but they were able to pull things back on track every time they were met with a challenge.

We’d like to thank all our app users who helped to support Connecticut by signing the petition and calling Connecticut’s Governor Malloy and House Speaker Sharkey.

If this GMO labeling law passes in Connecticut, it will set a precedent and help to open the door for labeling laws across the country.

Now we must continue to be steadfast and vigilant so that if Connecticut’s labeling bill passes, the success cannot be blocked by Monsanto.

Monsanto has already positioned itself in two very devious ways that could potentially undermine the success of Connecticut’s labeling law even if it passes.

Please visit the ‘Petitions’ tab inside your LabelGMO app and sign the two petitions that are currently posted there.  In case you haven’t downloaded the app yet, here are the links to the petitions:

Stop the Monsanto Protection Act:

Protect states’ rights to label GMOs:
https://secure3.convio.net/aahf/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=1549

Be sure to sign BOTH petitions, because they are for two different pieces of legislation.

The first petition is to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act, which was passed into law in March and prohibits courts from stopping the sale and planting of illegal GMO seed.

The second petition asks members of the House of Representatives to please strike the King amendment from the House version of the 2013 Farm Bill.

If this amendment is not stricken from the Farm Bill, it could take away a state’s power to create GMO labeling laws for their state and could render any existing labeling laws null and void.

Please take the time to visit the ‘Petitions’ tab in your LabelGMO app to gain access to these two very important petitions.

If you spread the word, we’ll help educate everyone.  Use the “Spread the Word” button in this app to tell your friends and family about GMOs and the LABEL GMO app.

MAJOR SETBACK in REPEAL of Monsanto Protection Act (MPA)

MAJOR SETBACK in the effort to REPEAL Monsanto Protection Act

BAD NEWS! A MAJOR SETBACK in the noble and desperate effort to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act which prevents courts from stopping the sale & planting of illegally approved GMO seed!

Sen. Jeff Merkley’s attempt to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act (MPA) was blocked by Sen. Roy Blunt (the senator who wrote the MPA and cleverly engineered getting it through the Senate).

Not surprising that Blunt has received over $168,000.00 in political contributions from Monsanto.

The DANGEROUS Monsanto Protection Act…
The Monsanto Protection Act prevents federal courts from stopping the sale or planting of controversial GMO seeds, even if they were illegally approved and could threaten human health or the environment.

Sen. Merkley rose to the challenge (after the MPA was established) and crafted an amendment to the 2013 Farm Bill that would repeal the Monsanto Protection Act.  Unfortunately, when the Senate was addressing the 2013 Farm Bill, Merkley was blocked from introducing his amendment for a vote by Sen. Blunt.

BUT, we still have ONE MORE CHANCE.  It’s now up to us (THE PEOPLE) to support Sen Merkley’s effort or we may lose this VERY IMPORTANT opportunity!

Please spend this week telling everyone you know about this issue and ask them to get involved by signing the petition AND calling their Senators.

We need to make our voices heard… LOUDLY AND CLEARLY. The more people that take action the better chance we’ll have of getting the Monsanto Protection Act repealed.

Your ACTION STEPS are:

#1. SIGN THE ‘NEW’ PETITION. This is a NEW petition so if you signed the first one please ALSO sign this one. You can access the petition here.

#2. CALL YOUR SENATORS. You can call the senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your senators or you can look up the phone numbers for your senators here.

NOTE: USE THIS SCRIPT WHEN CALLING YOUR SENATORS
“I’m calling today to strongly request that you please support Sen. Jeff Merkely’s amendment to the Senate version of the 2013 Farm Bill to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act.”

BTW: When and how did the Monsanto Protection Act get passed?
It was passed without debate or a vote in March 2013.  It was passed without debate or vote because it was cleverly attached as an amendment to the Continuing Resolution that was being pushed through quickly and without debate because it determines funding for the US Government through September 30, 2013.  The Continuing Resolution and its amendment, The Monsanto Protection Act, were signed in March of this year.

Urgent Action ALERT: Repeal Monsanto Protection Act (MPA)

What’s the Monsanto Protection Act?
The Monsanto Protection Act prevents federal courts from stopping the sale or planting of controversial GMO seeds, even if they were illegally approved and could threaten human health or the environment.

When and how did this get passed?
It was passed without debate or a vote this past March.  It was passed without debate or vote because it was cleverly attached as an amendment to the Continuing Resolution that was being pushed through as an emergency because it detemines funding for the US Government through September 30, 2013.  The Continuing Resolution and its amendment, The Monsanto Protection Act, was signed into law in this past March.

As long as The Monsanto Protection Act remains in force, even the federal courts can’t stop Monsanto from planting new genetically modified crops!

Vermont GMO Labeling Bill Needs Our Help

VermontLast Friday, May 10th, 2013, the Vermont House of Representatives passed H.112, a GMO labeling law, by a vote of 99-42.  This is the furthest any GMO labeling bill has made it through the legislative process in the US.

Next, it must pass the Vermont Senate.  However, as these things often go, the timing on this presents an interesting caveat.

While the bill passed on Friday, the Senate’s session ended this weekend.  This means that the Senate will not be voting on this bill until January, 2014.

So how can we use this to our advantage?

We want to turn the country’s focus to Vermont and put positive pressure on their Senate between now and January, 2014 when they vote.

It’s important to know that whether or not you live in Vermont, the Vermont bill effects all of us in the US.  If it passes, it will make it easier to get bills passed in other states.

Also, if companies must label for Vermont, they will most likely keep the same labels throughout the entire US.  This is what happened when New Jersey required special labeling on bottled water.

No matter what state you live in, start talking about what is happening in Vermont.  Let’s get the entire country paying attention to the action of the Vermont senators.  Vermont needs each and every one of us in the country to stand behind and push for this bill to pass.

This is a grassroots movement.  We can’t accomplish this without the collective power of the people.  Keep what’s happening in Vermont in your day to day conversations with the people that you meet.

This is great news in the fight against GMOs, but the battle has just begun.  Keep spreading the word about the seriousness of this issue.  We can’t stop until everyone on the planet know what’s going on.

If you spread the word, we’ll help educate everyone.  Use the “Spread the Word” button in this app to tell your friends and family about GMOs and the LABEL GMO app.
